Making Rosin Jam, also called Rosin Jam Tech, is a way to transform freshly-pressed hash rosin into a jam-like consistency. It’s not a complicated process, but it can yield some truly stunning results. All we need for making rosin jam is heat and pressure inside of a glass jar, and we let chemistry do all the work. 

While there’s nothing wrong with dabbing fresh rosin, there’s a strong case to be made for curing rosin to enhance flavor, increase smoothness, and optimize consistency. Jam Tech is a form of curing, and it’s the main way that extractors apply a warm cure to fresh rosin. 

While cold curing (the other approach to curing rosin) is also effective, it produces different results.

Advantages of Rosin Jam 

Rosin Jam Tech rewards extractors with an impressive end product. Rosin Jam, also called Rosin Sauce, is composed of a gloopy, runny base filled with dazzling chunks of sugar-like crystals. These crystalline grains are actually nucleated THC molecules that “crashed out” and separated from the terpenes and lipids within the rosin. 

The visual appeal, texture, and formation of pure THC crystals within Rosin Jam are the qualities that draw extractors to this technique of curing fresh rosin.

Supplies Needed for Jam Tech

• Hash rosin
• Glass jar with metal lid that is safe for the oven (e.g. 1 oz Uline jars)
• Seedling mat / Heating pad
• Convection oven
• Oven mitt
• Oven thermometer

In your quest for the best hash rosin, fresh frozen cannabis is the ideal starting material. 

When it comes to pressing rosin from the bubble hash, use 37-micron rosin bags, double-bagged, with a low press plate temperature (not to exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit). Aim for a max pressure of 700 PSI. 

How To Make Rosin Jam

Step 1: Press hash rosin. Remember to keep temps low, and increase pressure slowly and gradually. For more instructions on pressing hash rosin, check out our Bubble Hash Rosin Starter Guide.

Step 2: Fill your glass jar with the fresh hash rosin up to a maximum of 80% full. Leaving at least 20% of empty space within the jar allows an adequate amount of pressure to build up inside. Pressure is a key factor in the transformation into jam. Be sure to seal the lid tightly. 

Step 3: Preheat your oven to 200-225 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooking the rosin inside of the sealed jar is the most critical step in the process, so verify temperature accuracy. 

Step 4: Insert the jar into the center of the oven. Let it heat for 20-60 minutes. The exact time needed will depend on the cannabis cultivar used and the amount of empty space inside the jar. 

Keep constant watch over the cooking rosin. This is not a “set it and forget it” step in the process. Don’t wander away from the oven, as there’s no way to reverse burned rosin. You’ll notice several color changes, which is completely normal (and fascinating to watch). 

Leave the rosin in the oven while it transforms from a solid to a liquid. The goal is to turn the rosin into 50% liquid. Do not exceed 75% liquid rosin. More than this, and you’ve passed the point of no return. THC won’t crash out if the rosin is overly cooked. 

When the rosin is around 50% liquid, use an oven mitt to remove it from the oven. Leave the jar sealed.

Wrap the seedling mat around the jar of rosin and secure it with a rubber band. The rosin can stay like this for 2-10 days. Do not open the lid at all during the cure. 

You’ll see the transformation taking place before your eyes. The color will continue to change, going from dark emerald to amber gold. 

Step 6: If done correctly, you’ll notice THC molecules nucleating within the rosin, or “crash out” as it’s called. More specifically, this is THCA, the acid form of the THC molecule.

This creates a sugar-like texture within the runnier sauce. What you have now is a rosin that’s partly runny, filled with THC crystals, and 100% fire. 

Step 7: Don’t open the jar until you’re ready to end the cure. When it’s got the consistency and texture that you’re targeting, the Rosin Jam is complete. 

Remove from the heating mat, open the jar, and enjoy. 

Potential Pitfalls

Rosin is easy to burn, and it can happen suddenly. Keeping a careful watch while it’s in the oven will save you from burning a batch. However, all is not lost if you do, it can still be used. 

Over-cooked rosin dabs probably won’t be too terribly bad, but you could also use it for vape carts. Heating rosin for vape carts is similar to heating for Jam Tech. Learn more in How To Make Solventless Vape Carts.

Overfilling the jar with rosin is another potential pitfall. If there’s not enough open air within the jar, there won’t be enough pressure created within the jar. We need high levels of pressure to promote the chemical processes within the rosin that we’re looking for. 

There can be times when overfilling causes the lid to burst off, which is definitely something to avoid. 

If the jar is filled only 80% or less but there’s still not enough pressure inside while it’s heating, the jar may not be airtight. Double check the lid.  

The evaporation of terpenes within the rosin creates pressure buildup within the jar. If you’re using material with a relatively low terpene content, Jam Tech may not work. If you’re following the process but still not successful, it could be the direct result of the cannabis cultivar.
