Now, let's get to the conversation...
Sonoma Sungrown: Welcome to another episode of the Homegrown Hashishin. I'm your host, Sonoma Sungrown, with my co-host, Don't Worry Be Hashy. Hashy, how are you doing today?
Don't Worry Be Hashy: I'm doing great, man. I’ve been on the hunt for a new rosin press. Done washing for the year, so now I’m ready to spend money I don’t really have.
Sonoma Sungrown: (laughs) It’s that time of year, right? Tax season rolls in, and suddenly everyone is out buying hash-making supplies.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: Exactly! And you know all the big brands drop sales around 420 because they know people are sitting on refund checks, looking to upgrade.
Sonoma Sungrown: It’s true. You can’t go wrong with a freeze dryer. That’s where the real magic happens. But anyway, let’s jump into it. Today, we’re thrilled to have a special guest—an exceptional grower and hash maker from Missouri. Everyone, please welcome Mo Buddy. Mo, how’s it going?
Mo Buddy: Hey guys, I’m doing pretty good.
Sonoma Sungrown: You’re based in Kansas City, right?
Mo Buddy: Yep, South Kansas City. Technically a suburb, but it still counts.
Sonoma Sungrown: How long have you been living there?
Mo Buddy: About 11 years now. Before that, I was living in Wichita, Kansas.
Sonoma Sungrown: Awesome. I think our listeners would love to hear your background and how you found your way to this community. You’ve got such a unique journey.
Mo Buddy: Oh man, where do I start? My story’s a bit wild. I’ve lived a lot of different lives in my 44 years. I’ve been around people from all walks of life—from some of the biggest names in glassblowing to people who taught me life lessons you can’t find in books. I’ve never been afraid to try new things or meet new people. I actually credit Instagram for a lot of my connections—I’ve met folks like you guys through there, and it’s been an incredible way to learn and share. My path has taken me from my early cigar days to becoming a full-on hasher.
Sonoma Sungrown: That’s incredible. You grew up around cannabis cultivation too, right?
Mo Buddy: Yep, I grew up surrounded by it. Cannabis was always just a part of our lives. My mom was caught with 80 plants in Salina, Kansas, when I was about six or seven. She went to prison for it. Before that, we lived in Moreno Valley, California, but she got busted for growing there too, which is why we moved to Kansas. We bounced around a lot. Everyone in my family either grew or sold cannabis. None of us ever saw it as wrong. To us, it was a valuable commodity—a way to make an honest living.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: It’s wild how things have changed—or haven’t, depending on where you are. Now you get a license and start out in debt.
Mo Buddy: Right? Missouri’s home grow law allows six plants per person, but I feel like they set people up for failure. Most growers aren’t going to stick to six plants—they’re going to push the limits, especially with the freedom they feel they have. I’m worried that we’re going to see more people getting into legal trouble at pop-up events and sessions. Maybe it’s just my past trauma speaking—I’ve seen the worst of it firsthand. The raids, the prison time—it leaves a mark.
Sonoma Sungrown: Totally understandable. It’s a valid concern. And some states are even worse—you can’t grow at all. You’re stuck buying mediocre dispensary products.
Mo Buddy: Exactly. Places like Florida and Illinois have harsh restrictions. And New York and New Jersey—I’m surprised they don’t have better growers' rights.
Sonoma Sungrown: Yeah, it's surprising. But at least Missouri lets you grow.
Mo Buddy: True. And you can get a temporary license to purchase in Oklahoma. But transporting it back home? That’s tricky. You have to avoid crossing through Kansas.
Sonoma Sungrown: Let's shift gears. I’m curious about your grow style. You’re known for natural farming, but it’s not strictly Korean Natural Farming (KNF), right?
Mo Buddy: Right. I just call it natural farming. The whole idea is to recycle nutrients. I use food scraps and fallen wood from my property to enrich the soil. I chopped down a peach tree last year, ran it through my lawnmower, and buried it with fruits and vegetables. My backyard is like one massive worm bed.
Sonoma Sungrown: Did you build your soil from scratch?
Mo Buddy: When I bought my house three years ago, I brought all my living soil from my old place in 27-gallon totes. I was recovering from a spinal injury after a car accident—I had to move everything with a cane. My friends helped, but it was still a challenge.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: That’s dedication.
Mo Buddy: I wasn’t about to leave behind years of work. I’m cheap too—building good soil takes time and effort.
Sonoma Sungrown: Are you growing indoors, outdoors, or both?
Mo Buddy: Both. Indoors, I recently switched to Veg + Bloom, a synthetic powder nutrient line. Outdoors, I stick to 100% natural farming.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: How do you handle environmental factors?
Mo Buddy: I let the plants adapt. Fighting against your environment can be exhausting. Instead, I make sure I have good air circulation and HEPA filters. If you control spores and contaminants, plants can thrive even in higher humidity.
Sonoma Sungrown: What’s your drying process like?
Mo Buddy: I like a low, slow dry. In winter, it can take 25-30 days. During warmer months, it’s around 7-8 days. I’m old-school—I dry and cure whole plants before freezing. I only freeze a couple of plants per run to see what all the fresh-frozen hype is about, but I usually prefer cured flower for hash. The flavor is deeper and richer.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: What do you usually smoke—rosin or bubble hash?
Mo Buddy: Mostly bubble hash. I don’t take dabs often. I like rolling joints with bubble hash or coating them with rosin.
Sonoma Sungrown: You’re known for using a three-hole pipe. What’s the appeal?
Mo Buddy: It’s simple and effective. You heat a wand, touch it to the hash, and it vaporizes without combustion. It’s an old-school method that preserves flavor.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: Do you hand-wash or use machines for your hash-making?
Mo Buddy: All hand-wash. I started with machines but switched to 20-gallon brute buckets for higher output. I use a heavy-duty food-grade paddle for stirring.
Sonoma Sungrown: What brands of bags do you use?
Mo Buddy: I’ve tried several, but Rosin Evolution and Press Club bags hold up the best. The Press Club’s hash bags are incredible.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: Shout-out to the Press Club—their silicone-coated sheets are amazing.
Sonoma Sungrown: Do you make temple balls?
Mo Buddy: Yep, I’ve been making them for years. Back in the day, we used dry-ice sift and silk screens, then pressed the hash by hand. I didn’t even know it was called a temple ball at the time.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: The knowledge wasn’t as accessible back then.
Mo Buddy: Exactly. In places like Kansas or Texas, concentrates were heavily penalized. I had to be extra cautious.
Sonoma Sungrown: You’ve traveled a lot for hash events, right?
Mo Buddy: Yeah. I’ve been to Kush Stock, Ego Clash, and the National Rosin Championships. I’ve met some of the best hash makers, learned new techniques, and experienced different styles firsthand.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: You’ve got a unique perspective—balancing cured and fresh-frozen hash.
Mo Buddy: Thanks. For me, it’s all about knowing your plant and your environment. You can grow exceptional hash plants if you put in the time and effort. It’s a craft, like welding or glassblowing. The more you practice, the better you get.
Sonoma Sungrown: Well said. Thanks for sharing your journey, Mo. This has been an amazing conversation.
Mo Buddy: Thanks for having me. I love sharing my passion for the plant.
Don't Worry Be Hashy: Agreed. Thanks for tuning in, everyone! Don’t forget to follow us for updates and giveaways. See you next time!
