The Right Way To Clean Your Freeze Dryer Trays

Drying your loose resin is just as critical as the wash itself. Freeze drying is what transforms wet, freshly collected bubble hash into the light, fluffy, shelf-stable product that connoisseurs have come to expect from top-shelf solventless. But there's something that doesn't get talked about nearly enough. How you maintain your freeze dryer trays has a direct impact on the quality of every batch you run.
Residual oils, fats, and resin left behind on trays from a previous run can contaminate your next one. That kind of carryover is the last thing you want when you've put in the time and care to wash a clean, high-quality batch of hash. The good news is that proper tray cleaning is straightforward. It just takes a little consistency and the right approach.
The Cleaning Process Steps
The goal is simple: get your trays completely clean without introducing anything that could compromise your hash. Here's the method we use and recommend.
Start with an isopropyl alcohol wipe-down. Before you introduce any water or soap, give each tray a thorough wipe with isopropyl alcohol. This initial step serves a specific purpose: degreasing. Residual resin and oils from your hash tend to cling to the tray surface, and IPA cuts through that buildup effectively, loosening what water and soap alone might not fully remove. Use a clean cloth or paper towel and make sure you're covering the entire surface.

Rinse with water. Once you've wiped the trays down with IPA, give them a good rinse with water to clear off any remaining alcohol and the residue it lifted. This prepares the surface for the scrubbing step and ensures you're not just pushing dissolved oils around.
Scrub with hot water and soap. This is the core of the cleaning process. Hot water is your friend here because it helps break down any remaining oils and residue that survived the IPA wipe. Use a soft scrub brush or sponge with dish soap and work the entire tray surface. Don't rush this step. Corners, edges, and any textured areas of the tray deserve attention. This is where the real cleaning happens.
Rinse again with hot water. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with hot water to remove all soap residue. Any soap left behind can affect the surface of your hash and introduce off flavors. A clean, complete rinse is non-negotiable.

Air dry completely. Do not put your trays back into the freeze dryer while they're still wet. Allow them to air dry fully before your next run. Any moisture left on the trays before you load hash can interfere with the drying cycle and affect the final texture of your product.
Details That Protect Your Hard Work
The extraction side of making bubble hash gets most of the attention, and rightfully so. Strain selection, water temperature, agitation time, micron filtration; these variables are discussed constantly in the hash community. But the finishing process is where that hard work is either protected or compromised.
Clean trays mean clean hash. It really is that simple. Taking ten or fifteen minutes to properly clean your freeze dryer trays between runs is a small investment that pays off every time you pull a batch that looks, smells, and tastes exactly the way it should.
Treat your equipment with the same care you bring to your extraction, and your hash will reflect it.
