Every hash maker eventually has to pick a lane. Do you chase the speed and simplicity of a dry sift screen, or commit to buckets, bags, and a freeze dryer to run an ice water wash? Both paths lead to solventless concentrate, but the equipment you'll need, the return you can expect from a given batch of flower, and the ceiling on final quality are genuinely different. This is the breakdown we wish someone had handed us before we bought our first set of screens.

Two Roads to the Same Trichome

Dry sift and bubble hash are both mechanical separation methods, meaning no solvents ever touch the plant. The difference is the medium doing the separating. Dry sift relies on friction, cold temperatures, and screens measured in LPI (lines per inch) to knock trichome heads loose from dried flower and sift them away from plant material. Bubble hash uses ice water instead of friction: the cold shocks the trichomes brittle, agitation knocks them free, and a stack of micron-rated filter bags catches them as the water drains through.

  • Drying screens or freeze-dryer trays

A basic hand-wash kit with a couple of bucket sets can run a few hundred dollars. Once you add a commercial washing machine and a proper freeze dryer, an operation can easily run into the five-figure range. That gap in investment is the single biggest reason a lot of home hash makers start with sift before ever touching a wash bag.

Yield Comparison: What Comes Back From a Wash

This is where people get tripped up, because "yield" actually means two different things depending on whether you're talking about what comes off the flower, or what comes back once that material gets pressed into rosin.

Dry Sift Yield

From dried flower, dry sift generally returns somewhere in the 5–15% range by weight, depending heavily on the strain's trichome density, cure, and how many passes you run across the screens. That's a wide range on purpose: a frosty, well-cured cultivar sifted patiently across three to five graduated screens will land at the high end, while a rushed single pass on average flower will land closer to the bottom.

Ice water extraction typically returns a lower overall percentage, often cited in the 3–8% range, but what comes off is more selectively isolated. How Yield Changes Once You Press Rosin

Here's the part that actually matters if your end goal is pressed rosin rather than jarred hash. Starting material purity has a direct, outsized effect on how much rosin you get back. Dry sift is the faster method on any single session. A focused sifting run, carding material back and forth across a stack of screens, can be done in a couple of hours, though getting to a premium grade usually means three to five separate passes and a genuinely cold room to keep resin from sticking to the screen instead of falling through.

Bubble hash asks for more total time, just spread across stages instead of concentrated hand labor. Expect roughly 15–20 minutes of active agitation per wash, followed by patient bag-by-bag collection, and then 24–48 hours in the freeze dryer before the hash is stable enough to jar. All in, a wash-to-cure timeline often runs two to three days from ice to finished product, even though your hands-on time during any single stage is fairly short.

Which Method Should You Run?
